We Are All Biased

Bias is not something we can escape. It’s merely something we can minimize.

When it comes to making a decision, we strive to be “unbiased.”

But there’s no such thing.

We are all biased in one way or another. All we can do is seek to be aware of what those biases are, and reduce their impact.

Think about a jury: we bring in a group of citizens who have no expertise in criminal law and no prior knowledge of the situation. We bring in a group so that no individual dictates the outcome.

That’s the best we can do.

In our own lives, we can try to become aware of our own biases. To recognize situations where we should defer to others.

We can assemble our own jury, and select them carefully.

Friends who have our best interests in mind, but aren’t afraid to be blunt. Siblings who seek the same.

We can seek guidance from others who have been in similar situations but didn’t know us beforehand.

All will have biases.

We just hope they don't overlap.
